Glen Mar United Methodist Church

This dynamic, community oriented church is located on one of the highest hills in Howard County, Maryland. The design is centered on an outdoor courtyard that organizes the major program elements and provides breathtaking views toward the west.

A large informal narthex wraps around the courtyard and connects the major assembly spaces as well as the early childhood wing.

Terraced amphitheaters and oversized stairs connect the lower children’s and youth levels as well as provide informal gathering and performance spaces.

Adult classrooms and offices occupy the upper level. The main 1,000-seat sanctuary and 240-seat chapel flank the courtyard and frame views into and out of the site. The sculptural forms of their roofs are designed to allow natural light to flood indirectly into the worship spaces, heightening their sense of spirituality.
